The World's Most Boring Response to the #7RPGS Meme

Apparently there's a G+ conversation going on about your seven most played/GM'd RPGs. With all honesty and no real shame I present mine, in rough chronological order:

1. Holmes Basic D&D Rulebook

2. AD&D 1e

3. B/X Moldvay D&D

4. BECMI D&D

5. AD&D 2e

6. Labyrinth Lord

7. OD&D

You know the guy that goes to restaurants and orders steak every time? You know how people scratch their heads and rail at him to try something new, but he simply smiles and replies "but I like steak"? Well I guess when it comes to RPGs I'm that man. It's not that I'm not open to new ideas for my D&D games, I happily introduce new elements into my games all the time, but after 30+ years of gaming I'm still having great fun with D&D.

  1. Nice :)

Mine's pretty similarly D&D-centric, with a brief diversion into True 20 and Savage Worlds before realising I have no desire to play other game systems!

  2. Thanks Gavin, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Over the years I've been tempted to try out Palladium, RuneQuest and my more modern purchase of The One Ring, but then think of all the work involved learning and then teaching my group a new set of rules. Gaming time is precious and the hours whiz by too fast. Learning a new game vs. actually playing D&D, there's no competition, it's the latter every time.

And when I pick up a game that's heavily linked to a setting, like all the above are, I think to myself "I can simply use that setting with D&D, it'd be quicker and easier".

    Perhaps I'm a RPG Luddite. :-)

    1. Yes that's the thing I came to realise as well... I'm more interested in playing a game than I am in learning new rules, and in that respect the good old B/X rules cannot be beaten -- I know them like the back of my hand.

  3. I've strayed, but I keep coming home to D&D variants. The simplicity and elegance just can't be beat.
